Beautiful Places #0004 – Moscow,Russia December 25, 2009

Moscow

also known as Москва in Russian, is the capital of Russia and also the largest city in Russia. Wanna marry a rich man, come to Moscow, they have the most billionaires in the world.

Where is Moscow exactly?

Moscow is located at the western part of Russia, it is located to the west of St Petersburg.

What to see in Moscow?

The most famous attractions in Moscow are the St Basil’s Cathedral and the Red Square. Kremlin and Cathedral of Christ the Savior are also places worth visiting.

Excursions?

St Petersburg would be a nice place to visit. However, you would need to take a plane there. Please visit St Petersburg for more information.

Not sure what to do?

Catch a Russian circus in town. Moscow is the known as the birthplace of the circus. If it is winter, you can visit the St Basil’s Cathedral and spend some time ice-skating in sub-zero temperatures at the Red Square. It is a experience you would only want to try once, I assure you.

When to visit Moscow?

Summer time would be the best as the winters can be very harsh with sub-zero temperatueres and strong winds. Go during end of december or early January if you love to experience -20 to -30ºC conditions.

The people?

The people in Moscow, also known as Muscovites, are not as friendly and warm towards foreigners. They can be quite rough and they seldom smile. You might get bumped when walking on the street or train station, but the person(male or female) wouldn’t say sorry and would just continue walking. However, the drivers would stop to let you cross the road even if there is no traffic light or pedestrian crossing which shows that they are still quite courteious. English is seldom spoken by the Russians, so you might have to speak more slowly when communicating with them. One thing I like about Russians is they have beautiful legs, especially the girls, just like their tennis star Maria Sharapova.

Hungry?

Surprisingly, you can find many Italian pizza joints and Japanese restaurants in most parts of Moscow. A meal would probably cost you 150-350 Russian rubles. Try their famous Bosch soup when it is cold.

Tired?

The hotels in Moscow can be very expensive which ranges from 2000-8000 Russian rubles per night. Get one near the city center as it saves you time when traveling. Visit hotels.com for more details.

Traveling around Moscow?

Traveling by its commuter train would be the best way to get around Moscow if you don’t want to get caught in a traffic jam. However, you might find it hard to recognize the Russian signs in the train stations, take your time to look at the letters carefully to avoid going the wrong way. Moscow’s metro system is the second largest in the world, so it can be quite complicated.

Shopping?

Buy a Russian doll. They usually come in 5 pieces or 10 pieces, 1 would cost about 600-1600 Russian rubles, depending on the quality.

Is it safe?

Beware of pickpockets in the Red Square. Don’t venture alone during night time.

Nearest airport?

Domodedovo International Airport and the Sheremetyevo International Airport.

In the past?

Moscow was the venue for the 1980 Olympics.

Are you a soccer fan?

CSKA Moscow and FC Spartak Mocscow are the cities main soccer clubs. However, ice hockey remains the cities number 1 sport. PBC CSKA Moscow is 1 of the top basketball teams in the Euroleague.

My Personal Experience?

My favourite place to visit would be the St Basil’s Cathedral and the Red Square. However, it is always torturing to go out during the winter. I’ve visited the St Basil’s Cathedral when the temperature was -15ºC and it was a really torturing experience. I am a tropical animal so I can’t stand the cold at all. However, it is definitely worth all the pain to visit the St Basil’s Cathedral as it is simply spectacular. You will understand how I fell when you see it yourself :)
